We hope you will enjoy your stay at Old Bald Peg and can spare a few minutes to share your thoughts and experiences in the visitors book for the benefit of future guests.

  • We've just spent Christmas at Old Bald Peg and we couldn't have chosen a better cottage. Angela is an excellent host and was brilliant helping us make all the arrangements beforehand, including putting things in the freezer ready for our arrival. When we did arrive, the cottage look so beautiful with such tasteful decorations everywhere. Plus the most amazing welcome hamper we've ever had (and we've stayed in lot of cottages!). All the home made produce was such a treat and even home made bread and cake. Plus wine, prosecco, crackers - you name it, Angela had thought of it. The cottage itself is warm, cosy and beautifully decorated throughout. The extra bonus is that Wass is a charming village with a great pub a few metres up the road. Plus a short distance away at Byland Abbey is the great Abbey Inn run by Tommy Banks. Absolute gem of a place which ticked our "foodie" box. Walks from the door into the lovely Wass Woods - it was just about perfect and can't recommend highly enough. Thank you again for everything.

  • We’ve just returned from a long weekend at Old Bald Peg. I can’t praise it enough. The house is beautiful (the photos don’t do it justice) and Angela has thought of absolutely everything. Ours was a celebration weekend and Angela even baked us a cake! Honestly I think it’s the best holiday home I’ve ever stayed in, such good quality, amazingly tasteful decor and so cosy and homely. Great location, too! 10 out of 10! Thank you Angela

  • We have just returned from a fantastic 10 days staying at Old Bald Peg. A really super little cottage, beautifully equipped, with lots of little luxurious touches that we really appreciated. Excellent huge comfy bed and a great shower too. We particularly liked the basket of home baked goodies waiting for us and we stretched out the Yorkshire Brack for as long as we could! The pubs in the area are great - especially the local in the village! There is so much to see and do that we will have to go back again!
Angela was extremely kind and helpful and was a great source of local information.

  • What a beautiful & well decorated cottage. Everything you need in one place. Angela is a lovely host & what a lovely surprise of goodies as a welcome. We will visit again.

  • We had an excellent week at New Year2022. The cottage is very well equipped & cosy. Angela left the best welcome pack we have ever had in over 30 years of staying in self catering properties. Bonnie the dog was also very well catered for, which was much appreciated. Cottage location is very good too, with lots of dog walking options. Helmsley, Thirsk & Malton are all within a short drive. Angela was very welcoming & we enjoyed our stay so much we have booked it again for this new year's week. We would recommend the property to anybody who wants a quiet break in a nice, comfortable cottage.

  • Just spent 3 days at the old bald peg with friends.
We have had the most amazing time & have fond memories to last us a lifetime.
From the moment we arrived we felt at home in this beautiful cottage,
The welcome pack was such a lovely touch. I won’t spoil it by sharing what we had but oh my it was fab.
The cottage was spotlessly clean, the beds are extremely comfortable just what you need for a good nights sleep after a days walking .
Loved the little courtyard lovely for evening drinks surrounded by sweet smelling flowers.
Angela (owner) has thought of everything to make your stay perfect.
Her communication prior to & during our visit was great . She has a wealth of knowledge about the local area & what’s going on.
Wass is a beautiful quaint little village with access to too many places worthy of a visit to mention.
Byland Abbey is within walking distance & worth a visit.
Thirsk and Sutton Bank with the Kilburn White Horse is close by and has a great walk /cycling route. We saw gliders whilst we were there. The views are stunning.
Helmsley is a smashing place to visit. Loved the town cryer.
We did a 6 mile circular walk from the cottage & thoroughly enjoyed it.
Highly recommend a stay here you will not be disappointed.

  • We chose for the Old Bald Peg because it is located more or less central in the York region, where we could make some wonderful walks. And also it isn’t far from York, which we visited too.
We really liked the cottage. We received a warm welcome and the cottage. Is quite comfortable and well fully equipped.
We certainly had a good time. Thanks for the good care.

  • We just want to say we have really enjoyed staying in Old Bald Peg cottage. We needed the break so much and the cottage hit the mark, it's so lovely and quiet here. The kitchen is so well equipped with everything you need, in fact every room is very well presented, we particularly liked the garden room. The 'goodies' that were left were very much appreciated, (compliments to the baker).
This is a good base for touring the moors. Thirsk with its James Herriot connection, Sutton Bank for fabulous views, and several National Trust properties are all within easy reach.

  • We have just returned from a wonderful extended stay at this extremely clean and comfortable cottage. We enjoyed our time so much we actually stayed an extra night just to relax all day by the fire!
On arrival we were overwhelmed by the generous food and drink left for us. We have stayed in many UK cottages and most to an extremely high standard but this time expectations were definitley exceeded. Everything you could possibly need whilst youre away is thought about such as robes, slippers, USB leads for the phones, super fast wifi, dog biscuits and towels and a kitchen full of anything you will ever need if you should wish to cook as we did.
The beds made for a very comfortable nights sleep. To fall asleep to owls hooting in the trees is just delightful not to mention the dark skies and very little light pollution.
We walked to a few pubs which were a couple of miles away but worth it. We didnt try the Stapylton Arms as dogs are not allowed but from what we heard from the locals its definitely worth going.
We walked around the Hole of Horcum, visited Helmsley and the castle, ate at Coxwold and Ampleforth, walked the dog at Yearsley Woods and walked to Byland Abbey. The cottage is so centrally located to access many beautiful places.
We cannot recommend a stay here enough. Thank you Angela, your communication from beginning to end was exceptional and we cannot wait to stay again very soon.

  • We spent Christmas in this lovely, welcoming and cosy cottage which is extremely well equipped and tastefully presented. It is located within walking distance of some beautiful countryside and there is much to see and do without driving too far. The owners supplied us with some delicious home-made and locally sourced produce to start our stay off and we were also able to make a cup of tea upon arrival; which was very welcome. There is covered, off-road parking and a lovely courtyard garden. Not quite the time of year for sitting outside but I am sure it comes into its own in the spring/summer and autumn. Perfect for a glass of wine before dinner! There is an excellent pub with a good menu just minutes away too!
The owners, with their attention to detail, have established an excellent holiday facility. We will be recommending oldbaldpeg to friends and family.

  • We had a lovely 3 days at The Old Bald Peg. We visited at the beginning of November. The cottage is beautifully done up, very comfortable, cosy and homely. Downstairs the lounge has a wood burning stove, smart TV and 2 comfortable sofas. There are several USB charging points and very good wifi. The kitchen is very well equipped with all the utensils and cooking pots, dishes etc that you would need. There was a lovely welcoming basket of goodies including home made jam and marmalade, home made bread, home laid eggs, biscuits and fruit as well as tea, coffee, sugar, milk, butter, locally sourced apple juice, muesli and granola. We didn’t need to buy any supplies.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, the master bedroom is very large with two windows. The bed was huge, extremely comfortable with sumptuous bedding. There were Bath robes and slippers for us to use and the towels were wonderfully thick and fluffy. I really can’t fault this cottage.
We generally had breakfast in the cottage and then ate out. We did cook and stay in on one night. There is a pub called The Stapylton Arms literally two minutes walk from the cottage. The food is very good and the portions rather large. Book in advance. There is plenty to do in the area. We visited Byland Abbey, which is within walking distance, Ampleforth Abbey and estate and Helmsley with its quaint shops and cafes. Sutton Bank nearby is great for beautiful views and plenty of walking and cycling trails.
    We will be back

  • My wife and I spent three enjoyable days in October at Old Bald Peg cottage. It was delightful to be welcomed with provisions including homemade bread and preserves for breakfast – what a treat!
The cottage had everything we needed to make us comfortable – the kitchen is particularly well- equipped making self-catering very easy. We were very impressed with the lovely modern shower room and complementary toiletries. Also, there are numerous device-charging facilities, plus smart tv’s.
Wass is an excellent base for exploring the area, particularly beautiful at this time of year with wonderful Autumn colours. We visited Helmsley with its independent shops and many cafes (Crema serves first-rate coffee and scones). Helmsley Castle, with its audio-guide tour is well worth a visit. Nearby Thirsk is busier, and as fans of “All Creatures Great and Small” the fascinating “World of James Herriot” was a must and highly enjoyable. We also visited historic Byland Abbey, which is within easy walking distance of the cottage.
It was a pleasure to return to a lovely warm cottage and relax, before retiring to a large luxuriously comfortable bed.

  • Lovely cosy cottage in a quiet area, but close to villages, towns and York if you fancy a shopping spree. Huge super comfortable double bed, and kitchen well equipped enough to cook a 3 course meal. Staypleton Arms only a few doors away well worth a visit, superb food, recommend booking though!! Hearts cafe in Ampleforth do great lunches and cakes. Great courtyard garden where we made the most of the sunshine. Definitely recommend and would book again.

  • My husband and I spent 3 days at this lovely cottage in October. It is well equipped and beautifully presented. A huge comfortable bed, dressing gowns and slippers. Home from home. The Wifi was brilliant and had we needed to stay in the cosy lounge had a log burner and TV.
The owner lives locally and nothing was too much trouble for her. The welcome pack with home made bread and preserves and local produce was a lovely touch.
We were lucky enough to have warm October weather and spent an afternoon in nearby (50 min) Harrogate, and a day locally seeing the views and walking at Sutton Bank and Ampleforth.
The cottage is VERY well equipped if you want to cook, but if you don't :-
The Stapylton Arms offers a warm welcome for lunches and evening meals, great food, good value and literally a stones throw to walk.
The Owl at Hawnby, lovely setting in a village in the middle of nowhere, a little bit of a drive, good food, and a bit quirky.
Hope for a return visit in the summer months for more exploring and a glass of wine in the lovely courtyard garden, and as the cottage has 2 bedrooms and will comfortably accommodate 4 we might just bring some friends.
